She has an extraordinary way of leaning into both current events and her own personal experiences to educate and create awareness around the importance of diversity and inclusion. She helps to “Lift Every Voice” to help drive acceptance and discusses the importance of learning from failure in the journey to building a culture of support, trust, success and belonging.

I recently had the privilege of moderating an exceptionally well-received fireside chat with Paula for Uber employees. A true Renaissance woman and pioneer, Paula’s paved the way for countless others. Her riveting personal story, coupled with her perspectives on leadership and masterful storytelling skills, was both inspiring and insightful. As one of the few LGBTQ+ people in the Boardroom with intersectional identities, Paula's intervention in front of the National Association of LGBTQ+ Corporate Directors' Northern California LGBTQ+ cohort was a game-changer. Paula shared her governance journey while providing concrete tips for existing and aspiring Directors of underrepresented communities to succeed in the Boardroom. Paula combines charm, wit, and vision, making her a unique and inspiring speaker.

You were a fabulous speaker and so genuine as you shared your thoughts on leadership and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession and beyond. We were impressed with your range of experience from the military, to corporate America, to a career in music, all while leading by example and paving the way for so many coming after you. In our discussion, we saw your ability to relate to people of all types and backgrounds. Your personal stories showed us how to be diversity, equity, and inclusion allies in our work lives and our communities. Thank you again for joining us that day.

In May 2021, Southwestern University hosted two commencement ceremonies on one day. The first honored the Class of 2020, whom we were not able to recognize with an in-person celebration earlier due to the pandemic, and the second honored the Class of 2021. It was a treat to have Paula Boggs give the commencement address at both ceremonies. Her message was truly inspiring and uplifting—exactly what our graduates, their families, and the entire Southwestern community needed to hear after such a rough year. I’ve been a part of many commencement ceremonies and heard many speeches over the years. Hers was by far one of my favorites.

I’ve known Paula for more than 25 years during my work at Johns Hopkins, and she is an extraordinary volunteer, alumna and advocate for the University. In addition, I want to celebrate Paula’s talent as an inspiring speaker and visionary leader. This past spring, I invited Paula to speak to our entire organization (more than 500 people) during a professional development conference that was focused on celebrating “Resiliency” in these challenging times. Paula’s personal and professional stories, her encouragement of our team, and her infectious enthusiasm truly set the standard for our conference.

Paula’s talk was inspirational, motivating, and honest. Her unique life experience and wise perspective touched on many of the issues our company is discussing as we increase our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Paula was the keynote speaker for the kick off of our company’s first employee resource group focused on women. She covered a range of topics, including agility, resiliency in the face of the disruption of COVID-19, the power of inclusion, and many other leadership topics. Paula was the featured speaker at our September 2020 ‘Vulcan Together Enrichment Series,’ a series of discussions and reflections on issues concerning diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. Paula inspired our employees with her perspective, remarks and insight, weaving together both historical context and current exigencies. She has a remarkable ability to connect with people — even in a virtual setting—by authentically sharing her knowledge and life experience to inform a robust and essential dialogue. The feedback from employees was extremely positive and Paula was great to work with throughout.

It was my honor and privilege to have a fireside chat with Paula as a keynote at our Women, Influence & Power in Law event. By sharing with us her personal story and incredible life journey, she leads by example and paves the way for so many others. I cannot even begin to thank you for being part of our Town Hall yesterday and playing the lead role in giving voice to a perspective we all needed to hear. Paula Boggs was an excellent keynote speaker at the 2019 Ms. JD LaddHer Up Retreat. Paula’s authenticity and transparency were unprecedented and impactful for everyone from early career law firm associates to experienced general counsel. Paula was easy to work with and a pleasure to have attend our event. She added substantially to the success of the retreat and was one of our highest rated speakers based on attendee feedback.

We were really excited to have Paula share her story with us at our first Courageous Conversation event. It was hosted by our Employee Resource Groups, as she embodies all 4 of the identities our groups represent-Black, queer, woman, and a veteran. Paula was able to eloquently speak to each facet of her identity and how each helped shape who she is today. The feedback from the retreat attendees and sponsors, and the women who attended the pre-event dinner in your honor, have been amazing. I have worked closely with Paula Boggs on high-profile events in which Paula was a featured speaker. From those highly successful events, I know Paula to be always substantive and engaging, inspired and inspiring. I wanted to thank you so much for agreeing to be a keynote speaker at our Rotary lnternational District 5030 annual Conference two weeks ago at the Tulalip. You absolutely had the group buzzing and laughing during your presentation and afterwards while socializing with the members. Our theme this year was Light Up Rotary and you certainly did just that! I had so many people come up to me after the conference and now over the past couple of weeks, thanking me for bringing you in to address the over 500 members who were in attendance. You made ME look good, and that’s not always an easy thing to do!! You are an amazing individual, and if ever there was one, you’re certainly a Renaissance Woman. You fit so comfortably within any group. Academic, military, corporate and then throw in the musical side of your life….you truly arean amazing person. Having shared just one evening/dinner with you, but with your warm, friendly personality, it was like we had been friends forever. You were the same way at the podium. Now that I know you live here in West Seattle, where I call home, I hope we’ll be able to keep that friendship growing. Paula…if you ever need a reference for a speaking engagement, please have whomever it is, get ahold of me….but I have a feeling you’re fast becoming a women in high demand on the speakers circuit, so that might not be necessary. Again, thank you for entertaining and inspiring us all.
